Legislative Priorities
Too often, economic greed and ideological purity tests dominate our political culture, preventing progress on the issues that truly matter and that the majority of people care about: investing in workforce opportunities, improving public safety and resources for law enforcement, tackling illegal drugs and investing in substance use disorder programs, expanding mental and psychiatric services, boosting housing supply, streamlining business growth, and making it easier for entrepreneurs to start a business, and lowering healthcare costs so people can more easily access care. Kevin Schilling is focused on fixing those problems.
WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
To improve workforce development in Washington State, we must focus on creating high-quality jobs with fair wages, training, and standards that support families and communities. By expanding state-registered apprenticeship programs, we can build a diverse and skilled workforce, ensuring opportunities for workers of all backgrounds. Strengthening these programs and providing necessary training and support will help Washingtonians thrive in sustainable careers. Investing in quality jobs and workforce growth is essential for the long-term prosperity of our state and its residents. This starts at a young age. We need to work to improve our educational system so that we are dedicated to preparing Washington's youth for college, career, and citizenship.
INVESTING WISELY
Right now, the Legislature is spending record amounts of money on programs and services that are not showing results or working. This harms more than the taxpayers it deprives our most vulnerable community members of the critical help they need! We need to focus on doing what’s proven to work, as well as to re-prioritize spending to focus on areas where Washingtonians haven't seen improvements in years: public education, childcare, homelessness and housing, public safety, and reducing the cost of health care.
SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
Small business development is a cornerstone of economic growth. I will prioritize policies that simplify starting a business like reducing permitting times and lowering the costs for startups. These policies not only foster innovation and entrepreneurship but also create pathways for economic stability. By focusing on reducing barriers for small businesses, we empower individuals to pursue opportunities and build stronger communities.
HOUSING
I support Governor Ferguson's plans for building more housing in Washington. - Transit Oriented Development - Parking reform - Lot splitting and subdividing reform - Auditing affordable housing projects to understand how to build cheaper - Expanding the Multi Family Tax Exemption - Cutting red tape - Emphasize legal representation for tenants, and create a sustainable tenant assistance program - Expanding commercial/residential land cooperation
PUBLIC SAFETY
Public safety is a fundamental issue that affects every Washingtonian. To ensure safer communities, I am committed to expanding our police force to maintain a strong, visible presence. But police alone aren't the solution. I will push for expanding co-responder models, where law enforcement partners with mental health professionals to address non-violent situations more effectively. Tackling retail crime is another priority to protect local businesses, prevent theft, and deter criminal activity in our neighborhoods. We must also take a firm stand against gun violence, implementing targeted strategies to reduce the illegal use of firearms and protect our families. Together, we can build safer communities by supporting law enforcement, providing better resources, and addressing the root causes of crime. Let’s make Washington a safer place for everyone.
DRUG ADDICTION AND MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES
Washington State must address the growing crisis of drug addiction and mental health needs with a comprehensive, compassionate approach. We need to invest in mental health hospitals that provide safe, supportive environments for those in need of care. Expanding detox centers is also essential to help individuals begin their recovery journey in a controlled and professional setting. In addition, we must ensure access to involuntary treatment when necessary, to protect those who cannot make decisions for themselves due to addiction or mental health crises. By investing in these services, we will not only support individuals in their recovery but also strengthen our communities and reduce the strain on emergency services and our criminal justice system. Every Washingtonian deserves access to the care they need, and we must act now to make that a reality. Together, we can build a healthier, more compassionate state for all.
